Most of the time when you go through a drive-thru you wait for endless minutes and sometimes the experience isn't what you expect.
That was not the situation Tuesday, April 11, in the Golden Harvest Food Bank parking lot in Augusta, Ga, as families drove up to a group of smiling Food Lion associates waiting for them. One-by-one, each car was loaded with grocery bags stuffed full of everything needed for a nutritious Easter Meal: a Smithfield ham, sweet potatoes, green beans, corn, cornbread stuffing, carrots, brown gravy mix and more.
"Thanks so much Food Lion," Augusta resident Sharwanda Washington said. "This really is going to help my mom because you all are giving away nutritious food and she is a diabetic."
Each family, who were also clients of Christ Community Health Services, was pre-selected by Golden Harvest Food Bank, which serves more than 200,000 people who are food insecure across northeast Georgia and southwest South Carolina.
Currie Dalton, a Food Lion retail leader in the Augusta, Ga., market, said the event was very timely for local families. "Food Lion Feeds is proud to partner with Smithfield to help our neighbors in need," Dalton said. "We know some in our communities have to make tough choices every day when they are hungry and we want to help eliminate those choices, especially at Easter. This donation will provide much-needed nourishment to individuals across the city."
"This was something that was needed. Anytime we can help people this way in our community, it is special to my heart," said Paula Mason, another local Food Lion retail leader who participated in the event.
It was a special event for everyone involved, because throughout the morning, associates gave more than just smiles to local recipients, they gave the gift of nourishment.
