Not snow, sleet nor rain could keep Food Lion associates in the Richmond and Ashland, Va., region from turning out to help support FeedMore's Meals on Wheels program. For the second year in a row, Food Lion partnered with FeedMore Meals on Wheels for the 15th Annual March for Meals, a month-long celebration of Meals on Wheels designed to rally communities nationwide around the vulnerable seniors who rely on its vital safety net to remain healthier and independent in their own homes.
On Tuesday morning, Food Lion associates helped deliver meals to 850 home-bound seniors and disabled neighbors battling hunger in the greater Richmond area. As part of the celebration, Food Lion donated shelf stable products for Meals on Wheels emergency boxes and made a $1,500 donation to the organization to help them continue their mission to feed seniors fighting hunger.
"Food Lion Feeds is proud to support the March for Meals campaign in Richmond," said Kim, local Food Lion Store Manager. "That’s why we’re so proud to partner with organizations like FeedMore to help highlight senior hunger right here in our local community."
“Meals on Wheels is such an important part of helping seniors remain healthy and maintain their independence," said Mary Samsell, Director of Corporate and Foundation Gifts at FeedMore. "In addition to providing healthy meals, our volunteers are sometimes the only person they see each day so we also assess how they are doing and if they need medical assistance."
The Food Lion Feeds team will travel throughout its markets in the coming days to continue its "March for Meals." To keep up with the events, check back here at our Lion's Tale blog or follow us on Twitter @FoodLionNews.
