More Than Meals, Food Lion Feeds Delivers Hope to Residents in Charlottesville, Va.

"Oh my, no one ever comes to see me," are words someone will always remember as they deliver the only meal the recipient may receive that day.

On Thursday, March 16, Food Lion Feeds partnered with Meals on Wheels of Charlottesville/Albemarle for its month-long, nationwide "March for Meals" campaign preparing and delivering food to homebound seniors and area residents without access and resources to healthy, nutritious food.

"We are so thankful for all Food Lion is doing for us this week," said Leigh Trippe, Meals on Wheels of Charlottesville/Albemarle director.

Each day, Meals on Wheels delivers lunch and weekend meals to clients who live close to or below the poverty line. Many of the people they serve include seniors who have simply lost the resources to attain food themselves.

Additionally, Meals on Wheels provides a source of daily social contact for people who would otherwise be alone. It also allows for earlier release from hospitals and long-term care facilities and helps keep elderly and disabled persons out of institutions altogether. It helps older married couples remain together and gives many people the opportunity to live in their own homes for longer periods of time. Because volunteers check on meal recipients every day, people who live alone can feel safe, knowing that someone would notice if anything were to happen to them.

The agency currently serves more than 250 clients in the greater Charlottesville region, but today their volunteers were able to take the day off as more than 25 Food Lion Store Managers stepped it to make their deliveries.

"Feeding is what we do at Food Lion, and we are so proud and excited to be part of this distribution today," said Erica Flora, Food Lion store manager.

Food Lion believes no one should have to choose between dinner and rent, and as part of that commitment our associates are dedicated to serving our communities to make sure no one goes hungry inside or outside of our stores.
