Rep. Foxx Pauses for a photo with members of the Salisbury, N.C., distribution center and government relations teams.
On Dec. 17, Food Lion was honored to host Congresswoman Virginia Foxx (NC-5) at its headquarters facility in Salisbury, N.C., where she joined associates from the government relations and distribution center teams for a behind-the-scenes tour of the Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) certified distribution center.
The tour, led by Distribution Center Manager Tim Overcash, showed the Congresswomen the ins and outs of the path groceries travel en route to area Food Lion stores.
The group began on the salvage dock, where nearly every piece of waste, including plastic bags, cardboard and even splinters of wood from pallets is recycled. The tour then made its way through various areas of the 732,000 square foot facility, including the sub-zero refrigerators, which sit at a cool -5 degrees, and the banana ripening area.
Quality Assurance Specialist “Banana” Bob Smith walked the Congresswoman through the ripening process, even breaking a truly green banana in half for her to experience the smell, which, if you’ve not experienced it, is just like a cucumber.
The visit was part of a series of visits with area businesses Congresswoman Foxx is undertaking during Congress’ holiday recess.
