On Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2013, more than 700 associates from Food Lion and other major North Carolina employers teamed up for one of the largest hunger-relief volunteer projects in North Carolina, Sort-a-Rama.
During the event, which was part of Hunger Action Month, volunteers sorted bulk-sized bins of assorted pasta and beans into family sized portions. Their work produced more than 100,000 nutritious meals, which the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina distributed to families in need throughout Food Lion's home state of North Carolina.
The tremendous efforts of all volunteers served as a great illustration of what Sept. 11 represents for so many: coming together to support fellow community members. The impact of the event was so widely felt that even North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory stopped by to pack the first bag and thank the volunteers.
