Strongly rooted in its hometown of Salisbury, N.C., on Nov. 25, Food Lion surprised local feeding agency Rowan Helping Ministries with a delivery of 500 turkeys to help feed Salisbury families in need this Thanksgiving.
A shocked staff at Rowan Helping Ministries looked on as the delivery truck with Food Lion President Beth Newlands Campbell in the front seat arrived at the food pantry with the donation.
“Earlier today, I inventoried our turkeys and hams and realized we did not have enough to last through Wednesday,” said Nate Valentine, food manager at Rowan Helping Ministries. “When I learned about the surprise donation, it felt great, and I knew that God had sent this to us."
Other Delhaize America leaders including General Counsel Linn Evans, Senior Vice President of Strategy and Business Development for Food Lion JJ Fleeman, Transportation Manager for Delhaize America Howard Lilly and Dan Alexander, truck driver for Delhaize America, joined Newlands Campbell to help unload the turkeys.
“Rowan Helping Ministries, which our founder Mr. Ketner is deeply involved with, had a critical need for turkeys this holiday season,” said Newlands Campbell. “We are pleased to carry on Food Lion’s legacy of working to end hunger in our home community and provide this donation, so that Salisbury families who need an extra helping hand may enjoy a warm holiday meal together this Thanksgiving.”
Rowan Helping Ministries is serving an average of 80 to 100 local residents during this time of year who are in need of food this Thanksgiving season.
“Thank you for your generous donation!” said Kyna Foster, Executive Director of Rowan Helping Ministries. “It was incredible as the truck was unloaded. The turkeys kept coming and coming. Many families will have a great Thanksgiving because of Food Lion’s generosity.”
“As always, we are grateful for the continued partnership that Food Lion has with Rowan Helping Ministries,” Foster added. “Having Beth and her team here working alongside of our staff, volunteers and clients unloading the truck means a lot to us and further demonstrates the community focus and care we experience through our partnership with Food Lion.”
Food Lion is undertaking many other community support efforts to aid our customers and neighbors that may need a helping hand this holiday season. Stay tuned to The Lion’s Tale for additional updates on these projects
