What's the best way to wrap up a week of giving? At Food Lion, we did it by donating more that 18,000 meals, including fresh produce and shelf stable items, to more than 500 individuals and families in Raleigh, N.C.
Local Raleigh store managers and Food Lion leaders gathered early in the morning to set up a fresh produce market that families in need shopped as they went through the line.
Leo the Lion was on site and gathered hugs of thanks from children as they made their way through the event. Despite record hot temperatures, Food Lion associates greeted every recipient with such pride and joy to be able to give back to their local community. Some store managers even greeted their own store customers as they took part in the donation.
As part of the launch of Food Lion Feeds, the company posed the question, "What if there was a way to rally? Bring the community together?"
Throughout the week of giving, Food Lion associates showed what it means to rally and serve their communities as Food Lion visited five cities to highlight the breadth of hunger and the many faces that hunger impacts, including families, children, seniors and even veterans.
While today's event concludes the week of giving, it is just the beginning for Food Lion. By the end of 2020, the company will donate 500 million meals to eliminate the choices families are forced to make when they're hungry. We believe no one should choose between dinner and rent or gasoline and buying groceries.
Throughout the month of June, the company will also be partnering with customers in its work to end hunger in local communities. Each time a customer purchases a special Food Lion Feeds reusable bag in stores, the company will provide five meals to individuals and families in need, in partnership with Feeding America.
