With the launch of Food Lion Feeds, Food Lion’s hunger-relief campaign, the company has continued to search for creative ways to make a large dent into the hunger insecurity issue in order to help alleviate hunger throughout the communities within Food Lion’s 10-state footprint.
To further the Food Lion Feeds mission, on Thursday, Aug. 21, 20 Food Lion associates in Virginia Beach, Va., worked with AID NOW, a 501(c)3 non-profit that is based in Virginia Beach, to provide meals. During the event, Food Lion volunteers worked to pack Food Lion Feeds reusable bags with perishable and nonperishable food items and distributed the bags to 800 homeless students in grades K-12. This is AID NOW’s fourth annual event to bring education, health, sanitation and physical resources together to assist individuals in Southeastern Virginia.
“It was an absolute pleasure volunteering with more than 200 people from the community and 44 of my fellow Food Lion associates to work the AID NOW 2014 event,” said Food Lion Director of Operations Ben Gould. “Participating in equipping, clothing and feeding 800 homeless children enrolled in the Virginia Beach school system for this upcoming school year was a living, breathing example of how folks can count on Food Lion in their communities. The heart and soul of the Food Lion team is amazing. I am so proud to work for a company that gives back the way we do.”
Food Lion Senior Recruiter of Talent Acquisition and AID NOW Board Member, Jessie Calevas, also attended the event and shared her passion.
“The kids are so happy to get fresh fruit and healthy snacks that they can leave with. I look forward to what AID NOW and Food Lion can do together in the future,” Calevas added.
Food Lion has pledged to donate 500 million meals by the end of 2020 through Food Lion Feeds.
