Established in 1970, Earth Day is an annual event for those all over the world to demonstrate their support for environmental protection. However, Food Lion believes that it’s easy to reduce, reuse and recycle to protect the environment every day. Customers are encouraged to bring reusable bags to stores for grocery shopping. However, used plastic grocery bags are easy to recycle too! At the front of every single Food Lion store, there are blue, designated recycle bins for customers to drop their plastic grocery bags in. Food Lion will do the rest to make sure the bags are recycled properly.
Just two weeks ago, Food Lion earned the Environmental Protection Agency’s highest ENERGY STAR award, the 2014 Partner of the Year – Sustained Excellence Award. Selected from 20,000 participating organizations, this award is given to a variety of organizations to recognize their contributions in reducing greenhouse gas emissions through superior energy efficiency.
Additionally, last month, Food Lion unveiled an industry-leading seafood sustainability policy which ensures, with the help of The Gulf of Maine Research Institute, that approximately 1,000 fresh, frozen, canned or packaged seafood products sold across the store are responsibly managed.
Food Lion’s seafood sustainability policy provides full traceability back to the fishery or seafood farm, ensures that the seafood is sourced from fisheries governed by credible, enforceable and science-based management plans that respect the amount of harvest to ensure healthy future seafood populations, and ensures that production of farm-raised seafood does not harm communities, workers, the environment or human health.

Food Lion is also working toward additional long-term sustainability goals. These include working to enhance the sustainability and recyclability of our private brands packaging, improve transparency and traceability of ingredients in private brand products and divert 90 percent of our waste from landfills. So, on this Earth Day, Food Lion is proud to do our part to help protect our planet for many generations to come.
