Over the past few weeks, Food Lion is proud to have been able help provide thousands of Thanksgiving meals to our neighbors in need with the help of many associates, both at the retail and corporate levels, and our customers, through our "Holidays Without Hunger" campaign as well as the execution of multiple regional donation events throughout our 10-state footprint.
We believe ending hunger is the reason to give this holiday season, and hope our passion for helping others is catching! Below we've captured a snapshot of what the Food Lion Feeds team has been up to in order to help eliminate the tough choices many are forced to make in order to simply fill a plate, much less find a way to enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday.
Holidays Without Hunger Campaign – Nov. 16 - Dec. 20
To kick off the giving season, Food Lion has made it easy and affordable for its customers in its more than 1,000 stores to help families in need through its Food Lion Feeds "Holidays Without Hunger" campaign. Through the campaign, customers can purchase and donate a specially-marked "Holidays Without Hunger" food box for $5, while supplies last, or make a cash donation at checkout.
Food Lion Feeds is partnering with Feeding America®, the nation’s largest domestic hunger-relief and food rescue charity, for this campaign. One hundred percent of cash donations benefit the Feeding America nationwide network of food banks. All food boxes are donated directly to the local food bank or partner agency. Additionally, customers have the option to purchase and take the box home for their personal use.
Hornets Cornucopia – Nov. 17
For the sixth year in a row, Food Lion partnered with the Charlotte Hornets and Second Harvest Food bank of Metrolina to provide a Thanksgiving meal to many in Charlotte, N.C., who, otherwise, would not have the chance to enjoy the holiday at all. Food Lion donated turkeys and all the fixings to 1,000 Charlotte-area families in need during the event, in which the entire Hornets Basketball team, alongside Food Lion associates, took part in handing out the meals to the delight of fans. Several vendor partners donated drinks and other products as well.
Cam's Thanksgiving Jam – Nov. 21
On Nov. 21, Food Lion sponsored Carolina Panthers Quarterback Cam Newton's annual "Thanksgiving Jam" event through his foundation. During the event, Food Lion donated turkeys and all the fixings to provide a Thanksgiving meal for nearly 900 local children. In addition, the children were provided another full Thanksgiving meal to take home to their families.
Delaware Statewide Turkey Drive – Nov. 22 – Nov. 24
Food Lion associate volunteers from across the state of Delaware helped provide turkeys to 3,000 individuals in need. Volunteers from multiple Food Lion stores took part to help their neighbors.
5th Annual Street Turkeys – Nov. 23
Second Harvest Food Bank, The Charlotte Hornets and Food Lion partnered for WFNZ's 14th Annual Street Turkey Food Drive where we collected thousands of canned goods and raised nearly $9,000. During the event, members of the community were able to drop off turkeys while Food Lion donated a truckload of turkeys as well. Loaves and Fishes, a local food pantry, benefitted from the food collection.
Salisbury Holiday Caravan Parade – Nov. 23
Food Lion served as the title sponsor for the annual Holiday Caravan Parade, which runs through Spencer, N.C., and Salisbury, N.C., our hometown. Food Lion Feeds not only features a float in the parade, but sponsors the local canned food drive as well.
Charlotte Carousel Parade – Nov. 24
The Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina float in the annual Charlotte Carousel Parade is sponsored by Food Lion, where 400 turkeys were donated to accompany the food donated during a food drive at the parade.
#GivingTuesday – Nov. 29
For the third year in a row, Food Lion Feeds made a $10,000 donation, the equivalent of 110,000 meals, to Feeding America in celebration of #GivingTuesday, a global day of giving.
As December grows near and we continue our journey into the holiday season, the Food Lion Feeds team has several additional events and surprises planned to ensure our neighbors in need in the towns and cities we serve are able to enjoy a warm meal with family and friends.
