On Tuesday, Feb. 9, volunteers from Food Lion Store 820 in Romney, W. Va., helped the Mountaineer Food Bank distribute food to families in need with help from 30 Future Farmers of America (FFA) students from the local high school. Individuals and families began showing up two hours before the event began. Thanks to a donation of more than 200,000 pounds of food from Food Lion Feeds, the food bank was able to serve a record 300 families.
Local store manager Matthew McCormick said he was approached by the Mountaineer Food Bank after they were told they would have to pay to use space at the hotel next to the store. McCormick said he was really surprised a non-profit would be asked to put money up to do a food distribution in our community. This motivated him to act.
"I knew from everything we as a company have been doing around Food Lion Feeds that we could do better," McCormick said.
McCormick's associates also rallied behind the event to make it happen on an extremely short notice.
"When I heard that we were going to participate in this event I immediately became very excited and spoke up and said that I wanted to help, no matter what," said Cori, a region lead and trainer at the store.
Having local students helping people in the community was also very inspiring to the store associates.
"The FFA kids were excited, we were excited; we all knew the impact this food would have on the local community," Cori added.
In reflecting on the event, McCormick said he would encourage any store manager that has the opportunity to be a part of Food Feeds to grab ahold of it.
"It was deeply emotional, but also a great feeling to know I work for a company that allows me to give back directly to the community that I live and work in," noted McCormick.
