The lunch served at the third annual The Feedy's awards was so much more than pasta, chicken and salad because it provided an opportunity for us to feed those that make sure the neighbors in the towns and cities we serve do not have to choose between dinner and rent and gas and groceries. It was a day to celebrate and a day to say "thank you" to our food bank partners, 19 of which joined us in person, all of whom serve on the front lines providing hunger-relief every day.
Greg Finchum, executive vice present of retail operations, was master of ceremonies for the event kicked off the event with a powerful message: "What is never lost on me is the labor of love that this [fighting hunger] is, and we have a number of reminders that what you do makes a difference."
In addition to the plates honoring years of partnership with Food Lion, each food bank left with a basket of Food Lion's Taste of Inspirations goodies and $1,000 in gift cards for each food bank to take home and help support our neighbors when they experience unexpected challenges. The Food Lion Feeds Charitable Foundation also presented $165,000 in grants to 16 Food banks to support local child hunger programs. These grants will ensure food-insure children can eat when they are not in school.
One of the highlights was a drawing for a $10,000 walk-in cooler and a pantry makeover. America's Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia was thrilled to win this package so one of their member agencies can increase their feeding capacity and provide much needed produce and other perishable items.
Many of our partners also took advantage of the opportunity to tour the Julian Road Warehouse after the event. This is one more way we show support of their efforts by donating excess equipment to support their needs.
The Feedy's showered our food bank partners with genuine Food Lion care and we are certain they left Salisbury feeling supported and appreciated. We were humbled when we overheard one of our food bank partners say, "No other partner or retailer we work with ever celebrates us in such a beautiful way. Food Lion sets itself apart from all others and we are grateful."
