For the second consecutive year, Food Lion Feeds joined MIX 101.5 FM and WRAL-TV for a day-long food drive and mediathon in support of BackPack Buddies program and to raise awareness of childhood hunger in North Carolina. One in four children is at risk of hunger in North Carolina, and more than half a million children are going hungry across the state.
"The program was such a blessing to us. We were at a down time at that point in our lives and they really helped me to continue to be able to feed my daughter," said Latesha, a mom whose child benefited from Inter-Faith Food Shuttle's BackPack Buddies program. The program provides children from food insecure homes with healthy weekend meals they can take home in their backpacks during the school year.
Local students Maddie and Lilly felt compelled to donate after seeing how some of their own friends at school benefit from the BackPack Buddies program.
"Some of our friends get Backpack Buddies every Friday so they can have a meal," said Lilly.
Latesha, Maddie and Lilly were joined by listeners and viewers of the two stations in bringing food donations to the in-store food drives portion of the event, held at nearly 90 Food Lion stores across seven counties in the greater Raleigh area. Food Lion Feeds also made a donation of 55,000 meals to help kick off the event. By the end of the day, an incredible five tons of food was collected and will soon fill backpacks for hungry children this upcoming school year.
Nearly $200,000 was raised during the mediathon in addition to the food donations collected at area Food Lion stores. Through partnerships like this, Food Lion Feeds truly is making a difference in the towns and cities we serve, and we couldn't be more proud to support such a tremendous effort to help end hunger in our community.
