In celebration of Feeding America's® Hunger Action MonthTM, Food Lion Feeds has committed to donating more than 1,200 service hours and more than 1 million meals through its inaugural "The Great Pantry Makeover" event.During this month-long volunteer service event, hundreds of Food Lion associates will volunteer at 38 local food pantries.
With The Great Pantry Makeover well underway, Food Lion has completed makeovers and food donations at Laurel Advocacy and Referral Services, Inc., in Laurel, Md., as well as Rowan Helping Ministries in Salisbury, N.C.
On Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2015 Food Lion associates next spent the morning transforming the food pantry at OCA Food Pantry. Volunteers installed a new freezer and brand new shelving in the newly expanded pantry.
"The expanded space and new shelving gives us a more conducive use of space which will allow us to feed more families," said Jim Raley, Executive Director, Office of Consumer Advocates, OCA. "We could not have done this at all without Food Lion. Not financially and not without volunteers this dedicated."
In addition to the expanded space, new shelving and a new freezer, associates stocked the freezer and shelves with Food Lion products. OCA was nominated earlier this year by the Maryland Food Bank as a partnered feeding agency in need of a makeover.
"The partnership between Food Lion and OCA is so critical for this community," said, Amy Rupp, Maryland Food Bank managing director. "The expanded space and sturdy shelving makes this space safer and increases their ability to serve more families."
"We are proud to participate and be a part of giving back to the community," said Eric Sword, director of operations for the Hagerstown division. "Our team always relishes these times when they can help their community."
This week, the Food Lion associates will be very busy with service projects as part of the pantry makeovers, with upcoming stops at seven locations in Virginia, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, North Carolina and Georgia.
Through Food Lion Feeds, the company has committed to provide 500 million meals to individuals and families in need by the end of 2020.
