Launched in June 2014, Food Lion Feeds is continually searching for creative ways to put a full court press against the hunger insecurity issue in order to help alleviate hunger throughout the communities within its 10-state footprint.
Recently named the official hunger relief partner of the Charlotte Hornets NBA basketball team, Food Lion and the Hornets have made a three year commitment to donate 300,000 meals in the greater Charlotte, N.C., area, a goal which supports Food Lion Feeds' overall goal of donating 500 million meals by the end of 2020.
To further this mission, on Monday, March, 2, more than 40 Food Lion associates worked with Charlotte Hornets staff as well as Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina volunteers to build a "canstruction" of Food Lion private brand products. The structure, which replicates a playground, represents the one out of five students in grades K-12 who suffer from food insecurity.
The structure will be on display inside Time Warner Cable Arena for the remaining Charlotte Hornets home basketball games in order to raise awareness of childhood hunger in the greater Charlotte, N.C., area. From March 3 until April 4, fans attending the games are encouraged to bring non-perishable food items or purchase a $3 voucher for donation. All proceeds will benefit Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina.
