Food Lion has pledged to donate 500 million meals by 2020 through its philanthropic platform, Food Lion Feeds. As part of that promise, Food Lion Feeds stocked GHA Autism Supports' food pantry by providing 1,000 meals consisting of 19 different types of non-perishable foods to help end hunger in Albemarle, N.C.
On Thursday, June 4, 2015, managers and associates from two stores in Albemarle loaded boxes of food into the food pantry at GHA Autism Supports. Food Lion volunteers were excited to help end hunger, not only in their hometown, but also to patrons who frequently visit their stores.
"Every week, we're proud to have many local GHA Autism Supports residents shop in our stores," said Store Manager Heather Broadway. "Over the years, our store team has developed a strong bond with this organization and the residents. We're excited to make this donation to the GHA Autism Supports pantry to help serve individuals who make such a positive impact on us every time they shop."
The donated food will help feed approximately 90 residents who live in GHA Autism Supports' residential sites and will give them access to healthier food options.
"For us, it is all about trying to continue to build partnerships in our community, and we certainly consider Food Lion to be one of our strongest corporate partners," said GHA's Chief Development Officer Beth Olivieri. "By stocking the food pantry for the first time today, it enables us to train our group home sites to come and access a variety of healthy food which enables us to cut costs and provide more of the services to those we support with autism."
