According to Feeding America, one in five children is hungry, and for many, the only meals hey receive each day are those provided by their schools. To make a difference and help fight hunger in the communities we serve, Food Lion Feeds recently partnered with Help 4 Kids in Florence, S.C., to donate to their backpack program, providing local children with meals over their spring break.
On Friday, March 31, 2015, Food Lion associates in Florence, S.C., worked with Help 4 Kids Florence, a nonprofit organization that feeds elementary school children in Florence County, S.C. More than 30 Food Lion store and warehouse associates packed 2,000 bags of food to help students that struggle to get healthy meals during the weekend.
Food Lion Feeds donated approximately 3,000 pounds of food, the equivalent of more than 2,500 meals, of healthy food items to support Help 4 Kids and its backpack program.
"It was a great day for me knowing there will be more than 850 children that will greatly benefit from Food Lion's generosity," said Food Lion Director of Operations John Ameri. "I was humbled to take part and to be able to have my team present and available to lend a helping hand. I'm very proud of our team and of Food Lion for their efforts."
The bags of food will be transported to 17 local schools for 850 children. Each child will receive two bags of food during the week of spring break when they are not attending school or receiving school lunches.
"Awesome, proud and rewarding," said Store Manager Steve Robertson. "Food Lion has caring, responsive and available associates that are involved in the community, especially when it matters."
This donation event works toward Food Lion's goal of donating 500 million meals by the end of 2020 through Food Lion Feeds.
