Over 50 high school juniors and seniors came out on Thursday evening to learn about the "Art of Code Switching" at the 8th Annual Food Lion CIAA Teen Summit. The interactive session taught the teens different ways to communicate and represent themselves well in any setting, including a fashion show and dancing that demonstrated how dress and mood can affect the way an individual can be perceived.
Kicking off the summit was CIAA Commissioner Jacqie McWilliams who spoke about her own experience at Hampton University and how influential basketball was to her college career. Not only was she proud that the Teen Summit was part of the CIAA, she was also proud that Food Lion has been a CIAA partner for 24 years, including 8 years supporting the Teen Summit.
Food Lion's own Pricing Analyst Harvey Key spoke next about his experience at Food Lion and even made sure to mention the Food Lion Feeds campaign for the CIAA, #BallinOnHunger, where five meals will be donated every time the hashtag is shared.
Next up was Jacotron Potts from The Potts Group to talk to the teens about Code Switching. He started out by inviting all the teens up to the front and went through a series of dances, such as the Wobble and Cupid Shuffle, turning the room into a dance party. This wasn't just an dance party though. After everyone returned to their seats, Potts got the group thinking about if they had danced the Wobble to the Cupid Shuffle music how that completely changed what they were doing and how they were perceived. And from there on out, everything Potts said clicked with the teens.
Food Lion associate volunteers were also on hand to provide guidance and coaching, and learn about the aspirations each teen at their table had for their future. "The biggest thing I learned today was how to dress properly and tips for job interviews" said Azahaley, one of the teen attendees.
Potts ended the Summit with words of wisdom that's applicable not only to the teens, but to everyone. "You have to believe in you and your confidence. That's what will take you to the next level, and communicating your best."
