For many, November brings fun, football, family and food, but for others it can bring a Thanksgiving with empty plates and hungry stomachs.
As part of Food Lion's commitment to provide 500 million meals by 2020, the grocer partnered with the Food Bank of Delaware for the Turkey Round-UP event to make sure families in the Dover area are not forced to choose between dinner and rent this holiday season.
Food Lion associates could not wait to host the event at three stores located in Dover, Middletown and Bear, Del.
The two-day event, beginning on Nov. 12 until Nov. 13, brought awareness to the growing number of men, women and children facing hunger during this time of year by encouraging its customers to donate turkeys and canned goods to those who cannot afford a holiday meal.
To help spread the word, Food Lion partnered with WDSD- FM, Mix 92.9 FM, 1450 NewsRadio, WILM-AM, WDOV-AM, Fox Sports 1290 and iHeartRADIO to broadcast live from the event at several local Food Lion stores.
By the end of the event, Food Lion was able to donate more than 7,000 pounds of turkey, 5,700 pounds of non-perishable items as well as many monetary donations to the Food Bank of Delaware totaling 357,120 meals! Food Lion associates not only volunteered at the event but also contributed donations to make sure no one would go hungry on Thanksgiving Day.
"Personally, these events are both very rewarding and a sobering reminder of how many of our neighbors truly struggle on a daily basis to provide the basic necessities to their families," said Bob Mills, execution implementation specialist at Food Lion. "I couldn't be prouder of the stand that Food Lion has taken to assist so families don't have to choose between paying rent or buying groceries."
This year, Food Lion wants its customers to know "You Can Count on Food Lion" to help during the holidays and every day!
