Just two weeks after unveiling 93 remodeled stores in its greater Greensboro, N.C. market, on Wednesday, Aug. 16, Food Lion celebrated the grand openings of two new stores in North Carolina and Virginia! Food Lion is excited to continue serving communities throughout its 10-state footprint with these two store launches, and invites its customers to experience an easier, fresher and more affordable grocery shopping experience with dozens of new and enhanced store features. Shoppers will enjoy several hot food bars, a widened selection of local, gluten-free and organic items, walk-in garden coolers to keep produce fresher, longer and many more modern store elements at both new locations.
Below, we've highlighted the grand opening experiences at both stores to give readers a behind-the-scenes look into what it was like to cut the ribbons at Food Lion's newest locations.
"Welcome to Your New Washington, N.C., Food Lion!"
"I love it."
"This is what Washington needed."
These were just some of the kind words Washington, N.C., customers shared during the grand opening of Food Lion's newest store, located at 851 Cherry Run Center in Washington, N.C. This Food Lion is the newest grocery store in the area in nearly 10 years.
The crowd of over 200 excited customers, members of the Washington Fire and Police Departments and even cheerleaders from Washington High School celebrated as store manager Reggie Beamon cut the ribbon and welcomed the community into the new store alongside Food Lion leaders and associates.
Store-made artisan pizzas, fresh baked pastries and a new walk-in garden cooler that keeps produce fresher longer are among some of the new features customers will find. The new store layout featuring an increased variety of local products and gluten-free and organic items offers customers the opportunity to get everything they need in one shopping trip.
Food Lion has been a proud member of the Washington community for over 20 years, and its new location is the newest grocery store this community has seen in nearly 10 years. To show appreciation to its neighbors, the grocer donated gift baskets full of food to local businesses and the Washington Police, Fire and EMS Departments.
The new Washington location is opened daily from 7 a.m. until 11 p.m., so come on in and shop your new neighborhood grocery store!
Ashland, Va., Store Successfully Opens in Record Time
In just 11 days, several teams from Food Lion joined together to successfully transform an old Martin's location on 253 N. Washington Highway in Ashland, Va., into a new Food Lion store. After a brief ribbon-cutting ceremony, the renovated store held its grand opening at 8 a.m. and welcomed dozens of customers eagerly waiting outside to shop the new supermarket.
"The store looks great," said the store's first customer, an Ashland resident named Annette. "I live in the apartments behind the store and am happy another grocery store is on the corner. It's a lot different than the Martins. In a good way!"
Working until late Tuesday, a large crew of Food Lion retail and corporate team associates used every hour over the 11 days leading up to August 16 to transform the old store into a fresh, modern shopping center for customers.
"When you walk into the new store today you will see expanded services such as a brand new pharmacy and an expanded variety of deli options," said new store manager Anthony Whittaker. "This will be our first pharmacy in our store in Ashland and we can't wait for you to see it."
More than 50 customers and store associates were crowded outside of the store before the grand opening.
Customers will experience a new pharmacy and various deli offerings including a salad and soup bar, hot bar featuring various types of wings and an artisan pizza bar.
Before Wednesday's ribbon-cutting ceremony, customers learned about Food Lion's commitment to the community and how 10 Virginia store managers volunteered their time two days earlier to fully re-stock the nearby Hanover Food Pantry with a donation equivalent to more than 6,000 meals.
"Food Lion donated so much food and re-stocked our pantry on Monday, that when our clients came by to select what they needed they shouted, 'wow this is so much food,'" Director of the Hanover Food Pantry Jenn Inge shared with the crowd.
Food Lion's new Ashland store will be open daily from 6 a.m. until 11 p.m. The pharmacy will be open from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. Monday through Friday. On Saturday, the pharmacy will be open from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.
