Every once in a while, you come across a story that touches your heart. The story of one-year-old Sadie Grey and her perseverance through several medical procedures did just that. When Food Lion heard her story through social media, they knew they had to do something special for her.
Sadie is a one-year-old who was diagnosed with a rare liver condition called biliary atresia when she was just four months old. Since December 2014, Sadie has stayed in four different hospitals in two countries. Sadly, Sadie has gone through multiple procedures throughout her life. However, through every procedure she's had, she's been able to count on a special friend, her toy Food Lion.
According to Sadie's mother, Abby Hulsizer, the lion was given to Sadie by a family friend and the toy has since become a constant source of companionship and comfort.
"She took it back into her transplant with her," said Hulsizer. "She took it back with her when she got her pacemaker and when she had her bone marrow aspiration. During all of that, she had this lion with her. My son found out how much she loved it so he gave her his lion also. When Sadie is fussy, you can give her the lion and it soothes and calms her. The lion has been with her through every procedure."
Sadie also had her lion with her when her father Scott, a marine, gave her part of his liver.
On Tuesday, July 5, Food Lion's very own Leo, along with Community Relations Manager, Pat Taft, and Director of Operations, Delony Spraggins, visited Sadie and brought more than 100 toy lions for her and the kids at the hospital to brighten their day.
"We certainly jumped at the opportunity to just give a smile today to such a precious child," said Spraggins. "This has been such an awesome opportunity this morning, to not only just meet Sadie and see that sweet smile, but just to connect with the community."
"This was a wonderful and proud day for Food Lion," said Taft. "We were able to lift the spirits of this sweet young girl and her family."
Sadie's friends, family and the community are all rallying around her on her Facebook page. Thousands have extended their love and support.
"She has almost 50,000 people that are following her, just on a day-to-day basis and that completely blows my mind," said Hulsizer. "And for a big corporation like Food Lion to pay attention to my little girl is absolutely amazing."
Every single day, there are opportunities to let others know that they matter. You can show your support to Sadie and her family by following their story through their Facebook page.
