As summer heats up, so do the needs of many, as do the donations and giving events from team Food Lion Feeds. Through in-store campaigns, sponsorships, community giving events and more, we're proud to say we've now donated more than 89 million meals toward our total goal of donating 500 million meals by the end of 2020!
At Food Lion, we believe no one should have to choose between dinner and paying rent or gasoline and buying groceries. Unfortunately, millions of people have to make those choices every day. That's why we are so passionate about working to end hunger in the communities we serve.
Below is a recap of how our communities counted on Food Lion during the month of July to help alleviate hunger.
July 29 – Aug. 4 – General Mills and Food Lion Feeds In-Store Promotion
Through a special promotion with General Mills and Food Lion Feeds, when customers purchased five General Mills products they were able to save $2 instantly while 10 meals were donated to local food banks. In addition, General Mills donated $50,000, the equivalent of 500,000 meals to support this effort. This donation, coupled with a 250,000 meal donation from Food Lion, totaled 750,000 meals donated to local food banks!
Partnerships and Sponsorships
July 16, 2015 – Inter-Faith Food Shuttle and WRAL-TV Hunger Relief Telethon – Raleigh, N.C.
WRAL-TV and Radio 1, in partnership with Inter-Faith Food Shuttle, joined the "Hunger-Free N.C." movement, which works to educate North Carolinians about the root causes of hunger in North Carolina, which is number five in the country when it comes to food insecurity. Food Lion joined the movement during a day-long telethon, in which they donated 50,000 meals to help end hunger in local communities!
June 14, 2015 – Seeds of Nations Donation – Woodstock, Va.
Seeds of Nations' Representative Dorrie May came into a Food Lion store to shop for food to make sandwiches for a fundraiser to raise money that would provide clothing, furniture and food to Woodstock Va., residents. What she didn't know is how her love for her community would result in more than 13,000 meals being donated to the Seeds of Nations' food pantry and families in Woodstock who struggle with hunger.
July 16, 2015 – Summers Without Hunger Donation – Charlottesville, Va.
To help end hunger this summer, Food Lion Feeds partnered with Blue Ridge Area Food Bank to donate, pack and distribute more than 70,000 meals to at-risk families with children in Charlottesville, Va., and the surrounding areas. After the bags were packed and loaded for distribution, Director of Operations Michael Craig presented the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank with a check equating to 25,000 meals to help feed families who rely on the food bank.
July 25, 2015 – Summers Without Hunger Donation – Columbia, S.C.
As part of the "Summers Without Hunger" campaign, the Food Lion Feeds team worked with Harvest Hope Food Bank and Bethlehem Baptist Church in Columbia, S.C., on July 20 in Columbia, S.C., along with local retail associates in order to pack 650 bags providing thousands of meals to at-risk children who are not receiving school lunches this summer.
July 25, 2015 – Camino Community Center Donation – Charlotte, N.C.
Every year for the past 10 years, the Camino Community Center in Charlotte, N.C., holds an annual health and wellness fair, which draws between 4,000 and 5,000 families with children each year. Camino Community Center serves a prodominately Hispanic community in a variety of services by providing the families with contacts and service providers to prepare the children for the start of the school year.
Seeing the need, Food Lion Feeds jumped into action, procuring healthy fresh foods such as potatoes, carrots, onions and a bag of apples, along with shelf stable products like peanut butter, oatmeal, soup and pinto beans to help feed a community in need. In total, the food donated would provide more than 9,500 meals for the community.
