WHY:

The Food Bank of Central & Eastern NC distributes food to more than 560,000 individuals in their 34 county-service area struggling to provide meals for their families. Food Lion Hunger Relief Day donations will help stock shelves of all seven food banks across the state for the holiday season. Last year, more than 214,000 pounds were collected during Food Lion Hunger Relief Day which was equivalent to 180,242 meals.

BACKGROUND:

Food Lion will sponsor Hunger Relief Day at the North Carolina State Fair for the tenth consecutive year on Thursday, October 24, 2013. Fairgoers will receive a ticket for free admission on Food Lion Hunger Relief Day with a donation of five cans of Food Lion brand food.In 2010, 247,569 pounds were collected on Food Lion Hunger Relief Day, which is the largest amount raised in the history of the event.
