Food Lion will present $10,000, or the “lion’s share” of a $20,000 donation, to the winning agency on Wednesday.

In the online voting contest held Aug. 11 through Sept. 4, customers had the opportunity to vote for their favorite charity between Meals on Wheels Serving Central Virginia, the USO of Hampton Roads and Central Virginia’s Richmond International Airport Center and Richmond Public Schools’ Regional Preschool Learning Center at Maymont. More than 1,000 total votes were submitted, and the USO of Hampton Roads and Central Virginia’s Richmond International Airport Center took the lead with 437 votes.

Company representatives will present checks to each of the respective agencies at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 26, at the Food Lion store located at 8201 Hull Street in Richmond, Va. The USO of Hampton Roads and Central Virginia’s Richmond International Airport Center will receive the largest portion, and Meals on Wheels Serving Central Virginia and Richmond Public Schools’ Regional Preschool Learning Center at Maymont will each receive $5,000.

On Saturday, Aug. 11, Food Lion surprised residents living in the community surrounding Reinland Drive in Richmond, Va., with free groceries from its my essentials store brand product line. The groceries were delivered to residents’ front doors, and neighbors had the opportunity to select among a variety of household staples to fill their pantries. During the course of the morning, the company gave away approximately 2,000 my essentials products to more than 100 families. Food Lion also donated food to the LAMB’s Basket food pantry to support local families in need as part of the Richmond Operation Grocery Drop.

Food Lion plans to surprise a Charlotte, N.C., neighborhood with free groceries in October, and will award three Charlotte charities with similar contributions.
