SALISBURY, N.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Food Lion Feeds held its fourth annual "Feedy’s" awards this week to honor food banks, community leaders and Food Lion associates who share the company's commitment to ending hunger in the towns and cities Food Lion serves. The event was attended by more than 150 Food Lion leaders, community partners and Food Lion associates at its corporate headquarters in Salisbury, N.C.
"At Food Lion, we’re proud of our commitment to end hunger in the towns and cities we serve, but none of that work would be possible without phenomenal community partners and associates bringing this work to life," said Emma Inman, director of external communications and community relations at Food Lion. "It’s important for us to dedicate time to thank these amazing individuals for their work every day to eliminate the difficult choices far too many of our neighbors face."
The Feedy's winners include:
The "Lion Heart" Award – Dorcas Nelson from The Food Pantry Ministry of The Historic Bank Street Memorial Baptist Church in Norfolk, Va.
The "Lion Heart" award recognizes an individual that demonstrates outstanding skills in coordinating and motivating groups of donors and volunteers for Food Lion Feeds' hunger-relief projects to benefit partner food banks. This winner was chosen based on her longstanding commitment to the food pantry she helped create in 1998, and at which she continues to volunteer at the age of 94. Recently, she helped spearhead a fundraising campaign to purchase a new delivery vehicle, expanding the pantry’s reach and ability to serve more neighbors in need. The "Food King" Award – Second Harvest Food Bank of Northeast Tenn. in Kingsport, Tenn.
The "Food King" award honors a food bank that demonstrates an outstanding commitment to ending hunger through financial support, innovation, encouragement and by motivating others to take leadership roles in hunger-relief programs and community involvement. This winner was chosen in large part for their tremendous mobile distribution efforts to serve rural communities, seniors and children. For a video highlighting the food bank’s work, click here.
The "Lion's Pride" Award – Kristin Bertun, store manager at store #466 in Hampton, Va.
The "Lion's Pride" award recognizes a Food Lion associate that demonstrates outstanding skills in coordinating and motivating associates and volunteers for hunger-relief projects for the benefit of Food Lion Feeds and its partner food banks. This winner was chosen for her work connecting the store with the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank’s Culinary Training Program, leading to employment opportunities at Food Lion for program graduates.
