"We expect to receive more than 20,000 pounds of food in two hours. We are very grateful to Food Lion and Cabarrus County for this opportunity to collect food."

Food Lion and Cabarrus County Fair announced today a new partnership to collect 25,000 pounds of food this weekend to help feed hungry local residents.

Fair attendees are encouraged to bring four Food Lion store brand canned goods in exchange for free gate admittance to the Cabarrus County Fair from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.on Sunday, Sept. 9. The community effort is part of the first “Food Lion Hunger Relief Day” at the Cabarrus County Fair.

“We are pleased to help the Cabarrus County Fair and five local community organizations to provide meals for local families in the Concord area,” said Tracey Hermann, Food Lion Operations Director for the Cabarrus County area. “This is a great way to provide our customers and Concord residents with a chance to both attend the fair for free while helping local families.”

In addition to sponsoring the food drive, Food Lion will also donate approximately 4,000 pounds of food to go towards the 25,000 pound collection goal.

Donations received through the effort will be distributed to Cooperative Christian Ministries, Concord First Assembly, Operation Bread Basket, Mt. Pleasant Food Bank and Baptist Sharing House. The organizations will then distribute the collected food to Concord families. Last year, the agencies distributed food to 28,461 families.

“The Food Lion Hunger Relief Day will be one of the two largest single day food drives in the county,” said Barry Porter, Food Program Coordinator for Cooperative Christian Ministries. “We expect to receive more than 20,000 pounds of food in two hours. We are very grateful to Food Lion and Cabarrus County for this opportunity to collect food.”

Collection boxes will be set up at the entry gates. No items stored in glass will be accepted. Some of the most-needed items include the following:

  • Canned vegetables
  • Canned soups
  • Tuna fish
  • Peanut butter
  • Canned meats
  • Cereal
