Food Lion Receives LEED® Silver Certification for Williamsburg, VA., Store

Grocer Welcome Customers to Celebrate the New Designation at Store on May 24
Food Lion announced today that its Williamsburg, Va., store has been awarded a LEED® Silver certification. The grocer invites its customers to a special certification ceremony at the store located on 7537 Richmond Road at 2 p.m. tomorrow, May 24.
The Williamsburg, Va., store features a number of environmentally friendly construction and energy-efficient services, including an on-site recycling center, an educational kiosk and preferred parking for carpool vehicles.
Established by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) and verified by the Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI), LEED is the nation’s preeminent program for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings. By using less energy and water, certified LEED buildings save money for families, businesses and taxpayers; reduce greenhouse gas emissions; and contribute to a healthier environment for residents, workers and the larger community.

The store was LEED Silver certified on March 29. The company opened its first LEED certified grocery store in Columbia, S.C., and the Columbia store has since also received the silver level of certification. Food Lion also has two other LEED Stores in Fayetteville, N.C., and Hope Mills, N.C.
The Food Lion LEED stores in Williamsburg, Va., features a number of environmentally-friendly features, including:
- LED lighting in the frozen food cases
- Bike racks and preferred parking for carpool vehicles
- Low-flow and sensor-activated water fixtures in restrooms
- Rainwater harvesting system that captures rainwater from the roof and reuses it for irrigation
- Environmental education kiosks with signage
- A significant amount of building materials that contain a high amount of recycled content".
- CO2 Sensors located throughout the store
- Energy-efficient roof
- In-store customer and associate recycling programs
