"He is an excellent teacher at Ranson IB World Middle School"

Today, Food Lion honored a Charlotte teacher and Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School with awards at the 2016 Food Lion /CIAA Education Day highlighting their community impact.

The free event was attended by hundreds of middle and high school students at the Charlotte Convention Center. Students listened to Food Lion leaders about why they should stay in school to better their chances at a good career and the company recognized more than 50 students who were in attendance and had a 4.0 or above in academics.

In addition to the career advice and coaching provided by Food Lion leaders, the company also presented Ranson IB World Middle School history teacher, Calvin Johnson, with the Food Lion Top Educator Award. He was selected among a group of local middle school teachers and received recognition for his passion in teaching and educating our future leaders. Students and other school staff nominated Johnson for the award. An awards committee comprised of CIAA officials then made the recommendation for Johnson to receive the outstanding teaching honor.

"He is an excellent teacher at Ranson IB World Middle School," said Phillip Middleton, a coach and peer of the local teacher. "Calvin has truly lived up to his promise to help and encourage our students."

Also, in the weeks leading up to the CIAA tournament, Food Lion and Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina held a food drive competition among local schools. Today, Food Lion named Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School in Charlotte, N.C., as the winner of its Food Lion Feeds two-week food drive. The school raised 736 pounds, which was donated to the food bank to help feed local families.

The school won a free pep rally, which will be attended by the company's mascot and "Hugo" of the Charlotte Hornets. The CIAA continues throughout the week with a host of activities, with a full schedule available at www.ciaatournament.org/events.Reporters can also follow CIAA festivities on Twitter @FoodLionNews.
