SALISBURY, N.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Today marks the launch of Food Lion’s ‘12 Days of Giving’ as part of its "Holidays Without Hunger" program. From now until Dec. 23, the company will help provide food, volunteer services hours and financial contributions to food bank partners and individuals across the Southeast. Food Lion will donate more than 100,000 meals and nearly 1,000 volunteer hours to those in need this holiday season through this initiative.
“Providing easy, fresh and affordable food is Food Lion’s commitment to our customers. Through Food Lion Feeds, we’re able to share in that commitment with members of the communities we serve who face food insecurity,” said Christy Phillips-Brown, director of external communications and community relations for Food Lion. “One of our hunger-relief programs, 'Holidays Without Hunger' lets us bring a little holiday cheer to our neighbors at a time when they may need it the most."
19 events will be held in cities throughout Food Lion's operating area and include towns in Delaware, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia. Follow the events each day on Twitter @FoodLionNews and read stories from the events available Dec. 23 on the grocer's Lion's Tale Blog.
Food Lion will also continue to partner with its customers throughout the holiday season with the "Holidays Without Hunger" box. Through this in-store campaign, customers can purchase a specially-marked box for $5, while supplies last, or make a cash donation at checkout. All cash donations benefit the Feeding America® nationwide network of food banks, the largest domestic hunger-relief charity. Food boxes are donated directly to a local hunger-relief food bank, food pantry or meal program.
Through Food Lion Feeds, the company has made a commitment to provide 500 million meals to individuals and families in need by the end of 2020. Since the launch of Food Lion Feeds in 2014, the grocer has already donated approximately 250 million meals through in-store campaigns, such as "Holidays Without Hunger," in-store food rescue programs and associate volunteerism.
