Food Lion has earned the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency GreenChill Partnership’s 2013 Superior Goal Achievement Award, one of the Partnership’s honors for commercial refrigeration achievements. Food Lion’s store, located on 4760 Hardscrabble Road in Columbia, S.C., also received a Store Re-certification Excellence award.
The Superior Goal Achievement award goes to each partner that achieves its annual GreenChill refrigerant emissions reduction goal. The Store Re-Certification Excellence Award goes to each supermarket that has renewed its GreenChill Store Certification for five consecutive years.
"Food Lion is honored to receive the Superior Goal Achievement award again,” said Susan Sollenberger, director of energy, maintenance and equipment purchasing at Delhaize America South, which includes Food Lion stores. “Whether it’s making grocery shopping easy and affordable for our customers or being a good corporate citizen by reducing emissions, protecting the environment and becoming more efficient, we want our communities to know they can count on Food Lion every day.”
Food Lion has won GreenChill’s Distinguished Partner Award and Superior Environmental Achievement awards in the past. Food Lion has pioneered various technologies that save energy and reduce harmful refrigerant leaks, from GreenChill’s partnership to building two Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Certified stores in North Carolina and South Carolina.
“Food Lion’s Superior Goal Achievement Award proves that the company is serious about its environmental commitments,” said Tom Land, manager of EPA’s GreenChill Partnership. “In addition, the Food Lion location in Columbia, S.C., should be particularly proud of earning the Store Re-Certification Excellence award for achieving five consecutive years of GreenChill Partnership certification. These are achievements where Food Lion and its customers can be proud.”
Food Lion has more than half of the nation’s ENERGY STAR stores, with more than 1,000 certified stores. In addition, the company has partnered with utilities to evaluate a variety of energy saving opportunities. Food Lion officials received the award today at the FMI Energy & Store Development Conference in St. Louis, Mo.
