Food Lion is sending truckloads of water, food and needed supplies to relief centers serving Hurricane Katrina victims.
Two Food Lion truckloads of drinking water, food and supplies left the Food Lion corporate headquarters this morning, bound for the Convoy of Hope Relief Center in Slidell, La. More than 200 Food Lion employees came out and cheered the truck drivers as they left around 9:15 a.m. for the 12-hour trip to Slidell.
Food Lion, its employees and vendor partners donated the water, food and supplies. The vendors include Snyder Chips, Lance, Clorox, Vlasic Pickles and Schulze & Burch, makers of Food Lion brand toaster pastries.
Assisting hurricane victims closer to home, later today Food Lion is donating and sending a truckload of water, diapers and hygiene items to the Charlotte Coliseum, where hundreds of Gulf States evacuees are now living. The truck will arrive at the coliseum this afternoon.
Last week, Food Lion sent two truckloads of ice and two truckloads of drinking water to the Convoy of Hope Relief Center in Picayune, Miss. Food Lion also has donated food, water and transportation to law enforcement agencies and utility companies, working non-stop in the hurricane-ravaged communities.
Food Lion also announced last week it is making a $250,000 donation to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund, in conjunction with sister supermarket companies Hannaford Bros., Kash n' Karry/Sweetbay, and Harveys, all members of Delhaize America.
In addition to this corporate donation, Food Lion has launched an in-store campaign to further help the victims of Hurricane Katrina through the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund.
