Food Lion today kicked off a campaign to provide aid to the victims of
the tsunami disaster in Southeast Asia.
Through the American Red Cross Disaster Relief - International Response
Campaign, Food Lion is giving a $50,000 cash contribution. Other
Delhaize Group companies throughout the world, including Food Lion's
sister banner, Hannaford, also are contributing to disaster relief funds.
As the temperature drops and winter winds begin to blow, Food Lion
announces heart-warming news concerning its energy use and management.
More than 200 Food Lion stores in eight states have earned the
prestigious ENERGY STAR® designation from the U.S. Environmental
Protection Agency (EPA).
Progressive Grocer magazine, a leading supermarket industry publication,
has named Food Lion its "2004 Retailer of the Year."
Each year, the magazine chooses a retailer that "exemplifies the best of
progressive retailing. Sound operations, solid financial footing, and a
culture that breeds innovation and demands execution are requisites,"
according to the publication.
Food Lion LLC announced today it has signed a definitive agreement to
acquire 10 Winn-Dixie stores in North Carolina and Virginia.
The acquisition will carry out a key Food Lion growth strategy to fill
in and reinforce its presence in the company's current geographic
footprint. Food Lion will pay for the stores in cash out of its planned
2004 capital expenditures budget.
Food Lion is donating truckloads of ice, water and snack foods to assist
Jacksonville, Fla., area residents recovering from Hurricane Jeanne.
Food Lion is rushing approximately 151,200 pounds of ice, 16,800 gallons
of bottled water and thousands of packages of snack foods to Duval
County and Clay County. Working with the disaster relief teams of both
counties, the supplies will be distributed Tuesday, Sept. 28, at three
