WHAT: Smithfield will donate a combined 80,000 pounds of protein to the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina (CENC) as part of the company’s Helping Hungry Homes program. Food Lion, a Smithfield retailer and supporter of the Food Bank of CENC, will also participate in the donation. This significant donation in North Carolina is part of Smithfield’s Helping Hungry Homes tour, the company’s coast-to-coast effort to help families and individuals become more food secure. Through this program, Smithfield has donated and delivered more than 5.85 million pounds of protein to food-assistance organizations across the country.

More Information Food banks nationwide are reporting a significant increase in the number of people coming to them for help. The current recession and the continuing rise in unemployment are having a profound effect on food banks’ ability to meet the demand. As a result, food assistance organizations across the country have been reporting that more individuals and families are turning to them for assistance including more first-time visitors, unemployed workers, employed individuals, seniors and families with children.
